Calculating Carbohydrates in Recipes

Step 1:
Look for ingredients that contain carbohydrates.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 large egg

2 cups (11.5-ounce package) chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts

1 cup raisins

Serving Size is 1 cookie
Makes 30 cookies

Step 2:
Add up carbohydrate grams for these ingredients.

2 cups all-purpose flour = 88g
1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar = 267g
2 cups (11.5-ounce package) chocolate chips = 216g
1 cup raisins = 130g

Total Carbohydrates = 701g

Step 3:
Divide the total by the number of servings in the recipe.

701g divided by 30 cookies = 23.3 g per cookie
