Lately, there are a lot of diabetes snack bars being sold
like DM Choice bar, the Glucerna bar, NiteBite or Extendabar.
Most of these bars are meant to be eaten as a pre-bed snack
to prevent low blood sugars in the middle of the night for
people who take bedtime insulin. Almost all of them contain
some kind of uncooked cornstarch or soluble fiber (fiber that
dissolves in water to form a gel); this helps the bars to
be broken down slowly. Some bars like Glucerna and DM Choice
bar can be eaten as a snack and are usually worth about 1-2
carb exchanges. There is nothing super healthy or magical
about these bars but some people find them convenient if they
are on the run. They also often contain added vitamins and
minerals like vitamin C and iron.
