A Memorable Day at the Big Apple Circus
For the 15th Anniversary Celebration of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys and the children of all ages who attended the Berrie Center’s Family Celebration at the Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center The reviews are in, and here’s what they had to say:

“The feel-good fundraiser of the season.”

“A superb, warm, classy, spectacular event! Loved every minute of it.”

“Not sure who enjoyed it more—the kids or adults. A great cause and a ton of fun.”

"The palpable goodwill that permeated the day was really special.”

On November 15, 2015 all 1610 seats under the big top of the Big Apple Circus were filled with patients, families, friends, staff, clinicians and scientists from the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center. They came to honor the last 15 years of world-class diabetes clinical care and research at the Berrie Center. It was a day that memories are made of.  There were daring, young aerialists and acrobats, horses that danced, dogs riding scooters, a jaw-dropping juggler, clowns and mimes, a six-piece band, circus cuisine (with carbs already counted) and three hours of constant camaraderie.

Berrie Center Co-Directors, Drs. Rudy Leibel and Robin Goland; Advisory Board member and event inspiration Paul Healy and pediatric patients Paul Heck and Jaylanny Perez were designated ringmasters and opened the show with their comments. “The best part about having diabetes,” said Paul, 10, “is the Berrie Center.” Added Jaylanny, 10, “we’re here to support the Berrie Center because they are always supporting us.”

The event was generously underwritten by Berrie Center patients, families and friends as well as corporate sponsors. More than half the tickets were provided to families who would not otherwise have been able to attend. Vouchers for food were also distributed and everyone took home a Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center tote bag as a souvenir.

A rousing round of applause please for Paul Healy, the ringleader of the volunteer Circus Committee and the many ringmasters from the Outreach, Events, and Development teams at the Berrie Center and Columbia University who helped make the event a success.
