  Noninvasive Imaging of Pancreatic Islet Cells Using PET Scan

Purpose of Study

Development of  non-invasive method to image the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas using PET scanning.

Who is Eligible for the Study?

 Age: 18 yrs and older

 Healthy subjects with childhood onset type 1 diabetes, overweight subjects with the metabolic syndrome, and normal weight non-diabetic subjects are eligible for study.  Subjects will undergo MRI scan and PET scan of the pancreas as well as blood testing for characterization of insulin secretion.  Non-diabetic subjects will have arterial as well as venous blood drawn during PET scan.

Type of Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and normal glucose tolerance.

Time Commitment: 4 hours for PET scan, 2 hours for MRI scan, and 3 hours for glucose tolerance testing on separate days.
